Do women wear underwear underneath their swimsuit in Japan?

  I know that it's common in Japan but it's unheard of in North America. North American -and indeed most western women -shave, wax, and generally keep the bushes neatly trimmed and out of sight. Much neater and tidier than wearing undies with a bikini. Therefore there's no need for underwear with swim-wear. Plus almost all swim wear is lined with fabric similar to stretchy undies so the swim wear isn't see-through. Basically there's no need for it. And honestly when I was in Japan I thought long flesh colored trunks worn under a string bikini bottom looked strange. Like, if you're that ashamed of your own body then what's the point of the bikini bottom? No one is fooled -just wear swim trunks.
