What is the difference in lcd and led in TVs?

Is there a difference between led and led-lcd tvs?

  • I'm trying to buy a new tv and one website said there was a difference between the two. I'm confused now... please help!!!

  • Answer:

yeah, what he said. all your "led" tv's at your tv stores are lcd tv's. gotta love marketing right? samsung got into some trouble for that. they are just led lights with a lcd panel. your traditional "lcd" tv's are lcd panels with ccfl lighting (fluorescent tube lights). the samsung tv's are thin because on their 6/7/8 thousand models are edgelit (lights on the edge of the tv, same for the sony xbr8). most other companies put them in the back (theres two types; with local dimming and without). now the samsung 8500 set has back lit with local dimming and is still about 1.5 inches. but thats all asthetics, as long as the set isnt more than 5 inches like traditional plasmas and trad. lcd tvs. and yeah. oled tvs are going to be the sex. sony has one now, bout 20 some odd inches for a few grand. haha

An LED TV is nothing more than an LCD TV that uses LEDs for the backlighting instead of a fluorescent lamp. That will change in the future with the advent of OLED technology, but it will take a while.
