How can I keep the jazz rhythm when soloing on a piano?
-
When I play specifically with a bass and no drums I lose track of where I am and don't know when I change chords. How can I fix this? What should I be paying attention to?
-
Answer:
Try stabbing at the base triad of each chord on the one. So if you were doing... I dunno, "Tune Up", while your right hand is flying along with the solo, your right hand is just playing Em - A - D - D - Dm - G - C - C and so forth. Just hit it real quick to accent to one. Doing this will help you develop your awareness of the changes. Eventually you'll be able to start doing more interesting things with the right hand, possible bringing it into the solo in a more profound and pianistic way (like harmonizing with yourself)
