It wont let me sign into msn messenger?

when i try to sign into msn messenger this is what it says singing in .NET mesenger service failed because the service is not compatible with this version of the program

Ensure that your internet connection is working properly- check in the right bottom hand corner of your screen, the little computer icon should flash blue and black and have green strokes on the side, if you know what I mean. Also, maybe the version of msn you have is old and you may need to update to the newer version if you don't already have it. Hope this helps
