What length fishing rods should I get to learn pond and pier fishing?

  There isn't enough of a difference between a 6 and 6 1/2 foot rod for a beginner to matter that much,you are talking about six inches difference,this will allow longer casts with the longer rod,a little.A pier rod should be rather stout,as you are hoisting up some pretty good weight straight up the side of the pier,so you want one pretty thick so it can take this without snapping,a boat rod is ideal for this around six or seven feet long,with a solid reel with it.Penn reels are the best for this.If you get one that's a conventional type,you have the best kind,it's very strong for winching straight up the pier side.I don't know why people assume an ugly stik is the best rod for this,I guess the marketing of it sways their choice but there are better ones out there.A penn rod will cost more initially,but you won't have to ever buy another one,there's value in getting top quality from the beginning,and it will outperform any ugly stik ever made.I would hate to see a cheap rod and reel fail at the wrong moment.Even though I own one ugly stik,I also own many Penn setups,for fresh and salt water fishing,and guess which i use the most,yup,the Penns.They've never let me down.
