Can I bring a butane (Bic) lighter on a commercial flight?

My plane leaves in a couple of hours and don't want to have to throw away a brand new lighter. Can I bring it on the plane with me? How about matches?

Nope, it is a pressurised container and may explode should there be a loss of cabin pressure while inflight. Best not to carry this into the plane even as checked in luggage. Since smoking is banned, no matches will be allowed. Simple sense.

On a recent vacation I had to throw away TWO lighters (one going, one coming back). Matches are allowed, for some reason...just put them in your carry-on bag, not your pocket.
