Unless you are going to enter prescription orders you will not need to know advanced math or have to read any prescriptions. In most pharmacies the pharmacist enters the order and the technician fills it. The technicians job is to be able to identify the medication, pull the correct dosage strength from the shelf, fill it with the correct quantity, and make sure the patient matches the prescription. There are so many opportunities for pharmacy techs. You can work in a hospital setting (inpatient or outpatient), retail (Wal-greens, Rite-aid), I.V. dispensing pharmacy, long term care (for nursing homes), and so forth. Most pharmacies offer on the job training and may pay for you to take your certification test. You may want to familiar yourself with the top 200 medication list www.drugs.com/top200.html (type in your web browser). Get to know brand to generic names and basically what they are for. Most drugs have more than one usage but don't overwhelm yourself. Most are for blood pressure, depression, cholesterol, anxiety, pain, asthma, etc. Unless the pharmacy that you want to work for requires previous experience and/or certification, I don't think you should waste your money buying books or even attending a 2 year college. On the job training is the best!

There's no way to get that education for free. Sorry, you'll have to pay. Try an online college or a community college.
