  • Answer:

I had to have mine removed about five years ago, when I was in my mid-30s. It's done as an outpatient procedure, which means that you go home after the surgery. My doctor told me he doesn't know of any doctors who still use stitches--they all use cautery tools (a special tool which uses heat to seal the tissue and blood vessels so they don't bleed), or at least that's the regular procedure in the US. (It might be different if you are in a different country.) They load you up with pain meds, and you take home prescriptions because your throat is very sore after the procedure. It's a lot harder on adults to have theirs removed than it is on children, and adults tend to take a bit longer to heal. Basically, you just drink a lot of fluids and you eat soft foods--I ate a lot of oatmeal and applesauce and lukewarm soup when I had mine done. You just basically take your pain meds and make sure to eat stuff that won't irritate your throat. I was prepared for it to be really bad, but it wasn't. Before I had it done, I talked to a friend of my husband's who'd had his done. They actually did another additional procedure with him, and he lost a lot of weight because he couldn't eat very much, but I didn't have that problem because only the actual surgical sites were sore, not the center of my throat (which is where they did the other procedure on him). I basically vegged for three weeks, and then I was fine. I took my pain meds on schedule, which is really important, so I didn't have really terrible pain that couldn't be controlled. Don't worry too much about it. It's not as bad as they say. If you have other questions, you can contact me through this site and I will do my best to give you answers. Good luck.
