Where do you find facebook notes?

Has the decline of Facebook among teenagers made it more difficult for gifted/thoughtful teenagers to express themselves than ever before?

  • So it's often said that teenagers are leaving Facebook for services like Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Snapchat. There's something in common with all three services: that it's impossible to really express anything long or thoughtful on any of these services. They all seem to be services that instantly reward the ever-decreasing attention span of the Internet. Even before the days of Facebook, it was very possible to be thoughtful on forums/blogs/Livejournal/Xanga. But LJ/Xanga are both dead and fewer teens use forums/blogs these days. Even use of email is dying among teens. It's possible to be thoughtful on reddit, but even then, one doesn't often find the thoughtful multi-paragraph content that one often used to find on forums/Livejournal pages back in the early/mid-2000s. And while Facebook is hardly the paragon for thoughtful content, I do remember that Facebook Notes gave some opportunity for people to be thoughtful. Of course, Facebook Notes is dead now. Despite all of this though, Facebook still gives a lot more freedom for thoughtfulness than does Instagram/Tumblr/Twitter/Snapchat.

  • Answer:

Constriction creates creativity.  We consume snackable content now across tiny mobile screens.  I also think there's a reemergence of long reads so there's a market for teens that still want to express themselves in longer format on Medium or Tumblr.
