What do you think about homeschooling your teenager?

Do you think it is a good idea to home school your teenager to keep them out of trouble?

Answer:
Homeschooling a teenager won't necessarily keep them out of trouble, but it can if you keep them busy and away from some of the more troubled kids. Given all that goes on in schools these days, it is certainly easy for a teen there to find trouble of a major kind if they are at all interested in it. Homeschooling certainly makes it possible to keep a closer eye on a teen and what they are up to. Though if you suddenly start homeschooling a teen who doesn't want to be homeschooled, you may have trouble of another kind on your hands--I'd definitely recommend involving the teen in decisions about the methods and materials you will use and try to go on fun field trips and do some projects and such that interest the child to help the teen be a willing participant in the idea of homeschooling. Finding some homeschool support groups, or youth groups, or teen activities, so the teen can have some friends, too, will help a lot as well in keeping the teen from actively looking for more trouble, too. Good luck.

Homeschooling teens won't keep them out of trouble. Homeschooled teens are like teens everywhere. Some get into trouble, but most don't - just like teens who attend school. All the best.

Although homeschooling your kid will usually decrease the amount of trouble they get into during high school, it can have a lot of drawbacks. Teenage years are when you start to really become better at being social and further develop your personality. Teenagers who are home schooled tend to be more socially awkward because they don't interact with peers on a regular basis. Also, there's the possibility of it actually having the opposite affect than what you are hoping. I've known a lot of friends who were home schooled for their teenage years and once they got started going to public schools or college they went absolutely crazy because they were finally getting to experience things that they had been previously "protected from". So all in all, I would seriously discourage the idea.

I've been homeschooled since the beginning, and it's torturous. Don't do it.
