Who is the best poker player in the world and what makes them the best?

Obviously--this question is impossible to answer definitively, and any answer will be impossible to prove or disprove. It's also obvious that certain players will specialize in different games, some specialize in tournaments, etc. I really just curious about what answers and justifications people come up with.

As you said, it depends on what discipline we are talking about. Daniel Negreanu is a really good player and I think he is the best in the world against amateur or not very experienced players because of his reading skills and his ability to reach for information talking to his opponents. But this doesn't work really well against the highest caliber players, indeed his records in cash games in talbes full of pros (e.g. High Stakes Poker) are really poor. Watch this Tom durrrr Dwan is in my opinion the "sickest" player in the business. He has a fervid imagination and comes up with brilliant creative moves from time to time. He has an alternative style and he is a master at confusing his opponents. He pays attention to everything that is going on at a poker table, he is a formidable calculator, extremely "cold" player and he doesn't make mistakes. But what really makes him the best is that he has a terrific reputation and he is able to intimidate everyone that plays with him. They say it's incredibly hard to play with him.
