I agree with Robt. More detail: Standard definition miniDV tape camcorders can read standard def, DV format video only. They cannot deal with high definition HDV format video. A high definition HDV format miniDV tape camcorder can read high definition HDV format and standard def, DV format video.

Unlikely. You could try to play the tape in your friends MiniDV camera and see if you get an image on the camera Monitor. If you get an image on it, you may be able to capture to your firewire port via the IEEE1394 cable.
