How should I follow up after a second interview?

How do you know when it's appropriate to follow up during the interview process?

  • Here is the situation: I have had 2 phone interviews for a non-technical business development position at a major tech firm. I have a lot of specific domain knowledge, good contacts and am well qualified. I was referred internally by a friend of a friend and was contacted about 4 days after my resume was submitted. The first interview was a week later, and I think it went really well. I clearly knew my stuff, and I hit a few specific points I think he was looking for. The call was scheduled for 30min and took a little more then an hour. The call closed with him telling me to expect to hear from HR about next steps shortly. I did, and a 2nd interview was setup, a week after the 1st. This interview also went pretty well, I thought, though not as well. My self and the interviewer did not have matching assessments of some of the important market players, and while I think my 'change the world' enthusiasm and ambition was a major asset on the first call, I suspect that they did not go over as well on the 2nd one. Again the call went to about an hour when only scheduled for 30min. The call ended without mention of any follow up, and it's now been a week of silence. Even though neither interviewer was identified to me beyond their first name, I was able to use Linked in to figure out who they are. What is my next move? Just wait? Reach out to the 1st, or 2nd, interviewer on Linked in? email the HR rep that had been coordinating? The job is still listed as open.

  • Answer:

A courteous email to the hr rep who coordinated the interview. If you were not given full names or email addresses of your interviewers it could piss them off if you tried to contact them. Safe bet is hr. Quick piece of advice always get the full names of anyone who is interviewing you in advance so you have a chance to do some research on them before you interview.

Other answers

It sounds like they are interviewing other people and keeping you as a potential option if the others don't pan out. Because of this, try to speak with your friend who brought you in there to begin with to see what's going on behind the scenes. Once you know what is going on, then you can make a decision on what to do next. Good luck!

It is time to follow up. Make a call.
