    Your either low on water in the radiator or you have a stuck thermistat. When the engine is cool, open the radiator cap and check the water level (only do this with the engine cool!). Top off the water until full and then fill up the plastic reservoir too. Run the car after until hot and then see if your heater works. If you are still having the problem you probably have a stuck thermostat and that will have to be replaced.

You might be low on coolant. When this happens, there isn't enough to circulate into the heater core and it goes cold, also the temp sensor isn't seeing any cooant and will actually go colder, even though the engine is getting hotter.

Most common reason is a stuck thermostat. It's stuck open, so the water never gets very hot, especially while driving down the road. Replace the thermostat.
