What kind of nursing career should I pursue?

Can I pursue a nursing career with a Criminal Record?

  • I have a Misdemeanor Class B on my record and am wondering if that would prevent me from pursuing a nursing career. Any advice?

  • Answer:

Pursuing a nursing career with a criminal record is a possibility. The main thing is to be honest with the Board. I was in a similar situation a few years ago and I found that expunging my record helped. Expungment is a process by which you can clear your criminal record and legally answer "no" to questions on job applications asking you whether you've ever been convicted/arrested. I suggest giving it a try. Of course, when you apply to be a nurse, you must declare all your expungments as well. But at least you will show to the Board that you've recognized your mistake and took steps to rectify it. If you need more info, read the article below. I found it to be very helpful in finding out whether I was eligible to become nurse in California with a criminal record. http://recordgone.com/articles/california_nurse_eligibility.htm

The college can NEVER tell you if you can apply to take the NCLEX-RN after you have graduated from nursing school. They don't give the authorizations for it....the state does. Only your State Board of Nursing can answer those questions regarding criminal records.
