Answer:
Yes, it is possible to prepare for GATE and get a good rank without the assistance of any coaching classes.. :-) It's just that you will need to put more efforts on your own and more time into understanding than what would have been in the case of coaching.

Well I won't go too long for this , Simply & short suggestions Start your Gate preparations today itself(Conceptually). Use Hand written materials from the top GATE institutes like Made easy, ACE etc which are available easily on their websites. In case you are going for GATE2017 then start your revision today itself (6-7 are enough to clear) For aptitute practise more also you can read Newspaper like The Indian express etc whichever you like. Lastly, Practise more sample questions also refer to previous GATE paper to get insight.... "Nothing is impossible ,if you work really Hard" I am also to attend GATE2017 & I do follow the same techniques.

if u r in btech .... go for any coaching centre ...coaching centres motivate u and gve some competition mind...if u have 1 year time...then start reading textbooks, solving problems...learning concepts doesn't matter...learn and solve some problems on that....gate has vast syallabus...so u should revise regularly those concepts first start with aptitude(10)+mathemetics(15) these marks are good enough to qualify gate exam....then start with core subjects which have good marks pecentage

It is good that you are planning to start preparation for GATE from now but I would recommend to focus on your engineering subjects and understand them deeply. Use NPTEL material for preparation: http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/ Don't to aim for GATE but aim for excellence in all you engineering subjects then you can clear any exam. You are just starting so you don't need any special books or coaching institutes now and keep following standard text books for your engg. subjects. I also have an experience of one time on appearing for GATE.So I am answering this with what I experienced.GATE not only depends on thorough study of syllabus but also how you apply that and answer tricky questions. For scoring good in GATE, you don't have to focus on each and every subject of the syllabus. But focus on those subjects from which you get over 6 - 7 mark of questions. (I am not saying don't leave other subjects from which less marks of question come, but you can take care of that after studying those subjects from which you get high marks.)Now coming to preparation:-When I was studying for GATE in my fourth year of my college, for first 6 months I study hard. But in last few months before GATE, I get busy with my placements. And it really hampered my flow of study as well as the last few months revision. I was not able to give time for GATE study."It means you can't stand on 2 boats at a time. If any boat move from other, then you will get sunk."After all these, I was able to clear GATE and got 28 score, and my time the cutoff of Instrumentation was 25. But the score was not enough to get me a PSU job or a good college for higher study. Here the few things you have to do:- First you have to concentrate on GATE only, nothing else. You don't need to study 17 - 20 hours a day. But you have study that much which your brain and body take. Create a pattern of study don't study a single subject, because you will get bored. So change the subject time to time and than study. Study a subject thoroughly with its basics and complete it as fast as you can. So that you can give time to solve questions related to that subject. Because application is necessary, since there is chance of getting applied questions are more than direct questions. It is not necessary to join a coaching institute for GATE. Because classes of GATE in coaching are basically done 1 - 2 days a week with 6 - 8 hours. It is not possible by a normal student to handle so much pressure continuously for so much hours. Some students might handle that, but they loose their strength to revise those topics at home after coaching. Especially in GATE coaching, they just teach you formulas and other things, which were already known by you (since you had faced those subjects in your semesters). In coaching they just show you a path, but in that path you have to walk alone and cross all hurdles to achieve your goals. But the study material given by coaching are good. So if you may able to get those then it will be helpful for your preparation. Since, there study materials are in the form of notes and contain both solved and unsolved questions related to each topics. In GATE preparation, last few month of revision matter more than starting months. Because it will be useless to do such hard work, if you are not able to utilize those months. And this type of mistakes are generally done by candidates like me. Also solve previous years questions because it gives you basic idea. In GATE there is an Aptitude section which contain 15 questions. Don't take this section lightly it is easy but can give you 15 out of 15 marks, which can create difference. Overall for GATE you have to just clear your basics and solve as much as question you can. That's it.

Hi, Collect the books and materials that are needed for GATE exam. This step takes 6 months. The previous year solved papers are collected which are in chapter wise. It is important for gate preparation. The solved question papers are available through online for all the fields of engineering such as electrical, mechanical, electronics, computer science and instrumentation, etc. The refreshing of subjects is important for GATE 2016. The textbooks which are in printed form or e-books can be collected on all the subject with the syllabus of the gate. Then collect the sample papers needed for gate exam. With self study you can get good rank in GATE. I attended a coaching for Gate but I can suggest you how can you get good rank in gate with self study. For Gate 2017 now you have 10 months so utilize this time in a best manner. Get hand written notes of coaching Centre from Delhi and get standard books for all subjects of your branch. Start with a subject, at first study it with standard book thoroughly ( gate syllabus only) and solve questions given in the exercises. These exercises are important because now NAT questions are asked in Gate. Solve MCQs from any question bank( for ECE and EE, you can choose kanodia). And solve previous year Gate papers and objective papers of IES. To increase grasp on the subject refer hand written notes. Follow this procedure with all the subjects. Join two test series. You can join Made easy and Ace. Try to attempt most of the tests. Make short notes for each subject. Short notes should be relevant to Gate. Write formulas and key points in it. Don't write facts in it becoz factual questions are not asked in Gate. Try to revise these short notes daily in the morning. This will keep you in touch with subjects which you have completed. Try to complete syllabus by last week of November. And from December onwards start attempting full syllabus tests and do revision. Don't take test series score by heart. Never be over confident if you score good and never be disheartened on poor score. Just try to rectify mistakes and improve your score day by day. Try to maintain high level of motivation from first day till day of your exam.Avoid social media and join good forums on internet. If sometimes you feel low. Listen motivational speech and songs on YouTube you can listen 'biography of Dr Kalam narrated by Gulzaar.' Have faith in God.he always rewards hard work. All the best...
