Better bunny breed for kids: Dutch, Mini Rex, or Holland Lop?

  • Would 9 and 12 year old girls be able to handle Dutch, Mini Rex, or Holland Lop bunnies easiest? Which is easiest to care for? I do realize that not all bunnies are the same, I'm ...show more

  • Answer:

Holland lops are known to be very gentle and great for young children. Dutch rabbits are more independent, can be very lovable. But i think going with the Holland lop would be best

Actually, because you are looking for specific temperament and you already realize that it's not the breed that determines personality, I highly suggest you go through a rabbit rescue (not a generic shelter). I don't say this so that you can "save a bunny" but moreso because you will be able to find what you are looking for. The personality/temperament of a rabbit isn't evident until they are fixed. Rescue rabbits are fixed. Therefore, you are way more likely to get what you are looking for. Plus the rescuers know each of their rabbits well and will be able to help guide you to the personality that will suit your desires. Almost all of my bunnies have come from rescues and I couldn't be happier. Often they are even litter trained already too. This also saves you the hassle and expense of spaying/neutering a rabbit down the road to control aggressive or difficult behavior.

I breed rabbits and it doesn't matter if you have 1 or 60 rabbits require a lot of care and time devoted to them. However, im not saying that a 9 and 12 year old shouldn't have a bunny I actually recommend at least the age of 8 years old and up to parents. Although if this is their 1St bunny I would go with something abit smaller then a Dutch or Mini Rex... The only difference really in rabbits general maintenance is grooming for example: if you have one daughter that loves to brush babies hair and other animals a Lion Head Dwarf would be a nice choice. For easy maintenance I would say a Netherlend Dwarf n both breeds ideally get no bigger then 3 and a half pounds. their both energetic and once your daughters have bonded with them they will have the best of friend's! a mini rex they are very intelligent out of the bunny breed and sweet they have the softest coat and are very loving i would suggest when adopting you should let your children interact with the bunny before adopting it otherwise i would suggest a holland lop hoped i helped:)

Mini Rex IS the most friendist breed of rabbit. They are VERY tame and very cute. Mini rex all the way.

I have a mini rex and he's very lovable. He loves to be held and to hop around. The bad thing is over spring time, they shed HORRIBLY. So buy a soft bristle brush and brush them once a day with spray shampoo. My neighbor has holland lop and they are very cute and adorable they have longer hair and are very cuddly. But they like to run around a lot. I would look up both of their behaviors if I was you:) hope I helped a little. Goodluck (:
