What is a database engine?

What database they use for Internet Search Engine like Yahoo! or Google ?

  • Last night, i saw the question about 'what is Yahoo Answers! database', and suddenly i'm curious, what database they use for Internet Search Engine like Yahoo! or Google ? ...show more

  • Answer:

Google's database is proprietary, as is their search algorithm. In fact, they have many patents on it. Yahoo's database is unknown, though their job descriptions seems to indicate a mix of Oracle and Sybase, but heavily customized. So unless you have budget of millions, you can't duplicate either's database, or even come close. To just get "similar", they use relational databases. And Access is a relational database (for the desktop use).

prob something like oracle

im sure they are highly configured sybase, sql and access databases - depending on its purpose. they have more than one database. the speed of your search depends on other factors other than their db. the search algorithm would have a lot to do with it.
