Portwood's specialise in the over 65 travel insurance market - you can get quotes online at http://www.portwood.co.uk/travel-insurance/online-quotation-system.htm A unique feature is easy access to medical screening lines for all their products so if one company can't cover another one probably can.

Check whoever their bank accounts are with and what type of account they've got. Sometimes travel insurance comes as part of the deal and people just forget about it! Also, if they only want to go to Europe a lot, if not all, of Euro countries have reciprocal free coverage with the UK anyway for emergency treatment. As long as your mum wasn't going to one of these specifically FOR treatment then it should be fine. Check the fco website for the individual country they want to go to; http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/europe/ Also make sure they both apply for an EHIC card before they go. It's free; https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do

most insurance companies, will not cover you for existing health problems, but will for all other. As long as your mother is fit to travel, just get a normal policy, but you have to disclose her health situation, and certain things will be excluded from cover, but do shop around, you might need a letter from her doctor to say she is fit to travel

I have found Boots Travel Insurance (0845 125 3830) helpful as regards existing conditions. You'll need to declare and pay extra for each condition you want to cover, which will inevitably add to the price, but £200 for Europe does sound a lot. (Cover for the US is always extremely expensive, because their hospital charges are so high). And of course, make sure you all have EHIC cards as well.

No insurer will cover an existing health condition, but they will cover your mother for claims arising from any other cause - although she will need to disclose her conditions anyway. I find Planet Earth very accommodating and at reasonable cost. Your mom won't be able to get insurance directly from their website on account of her existing conditions, but will probably have to call and speak to one of their staff. The number (from the USA) is 011 44 161 439 0333. She could try emailing in the first place - [email protected]
