Should the countdown clock be visible to players on the field?

No way should it be visible. It has always been a part of the game that there's a bit of mystery to it and it's a bit of a risk closing up shop too early. Besides the last thing I want to see is an evolution like in Rugby league where the last minute usually ends up with guys walking to the tackles, falling over, putting the ball out and strolling to the scrum and other time wasting crap. We've got a great game - they should leave it alone. I wasn't aware of a clock like that at Simonds. But the umps have been throwing the ball up very quickly all year, so I don't see it made any difference. Might have influenced the decision not to pay the free, but that umpiring missed so many frees (both ways), it was pathetic all day. If they suddenly plucked that one out of their @rses then I reckon Cats fans would have had reason to be a tad miffed!

The coaching box knows and lets the players know anyway. I doubt it would make any difference at all.

As much as i like the idea. you are spot on about the players changing tactics. if it was up there on the board for the players to see. especially in close games, as the one you have mentioned. you would start to see more of the defensive type tactics being used by the teams holding a small lead with about a minute to go. playing keeping's off. or milking the clock as most of us call it.
