Other than being a lawyer, what occupations can a law degree get you?

What jobs can I get with a law degree? (besides lawyer)?

  • What else can I do besides be a lawyer if I get a law degree? I know I can technically do anything, but what are common jobs, besides be an attorney?

  • Answer:

In an insurance company, bank or any financial body that must comply with regulations from each state, you can become a compliance officer. That person reviews the laws from each state and makes sure that the company is in compliance. For insurance companies the states routinely issue audits asking for computer reports/evidence on certain aspects of their regulations to verify that the company is following the regs. A compliance officer oversees that audit and is the liaison between the company and the state regulators. Compliance officers can also issue their own internal audits. Not as much fun as cross examinations are, but an interesting job that uses a law degree and business knowledge.

Most people in public office and their advisors had law degrees. Lobbyist and half the people who work in Washington D.C. (And I am not talking about those in the government.) Reporters who cover the courts and government. International account executives (a high price salesman.) There are many jobs where employers require their people to have a degree in law.

You can do many things... 1. Law professor or an instructor at a community college for administration of justice; 2. Teach school for paralegals / legal assistants; 3. Human Resources manager. You can do anything you set your mind to :-)

I'm in the same position. Most of the alternative jobs that are open to law grads usually open up after a couple of years of practice. The government is good for policy type positions which use legal knowledge, but you aren't exactly a lawyer. You can mediate, work on the staff of a judge, etc. I'm going to bite the bullet and work for the government for awhile to pay down my debt and then look for something else.
