Medical Administrative Assistant?

What are the differences between a medical assistant and an administrative assistant?

  • i want to possibly work in a drs. office as a receptionist .... so which course should i take? the medical assistant or the administrative assistant??? thanks :)

  • Answer:

I have never seen an Admin Asst. position require a degree. They usually require experience. MA is a patient care position that requires a specific certificate/degree. If you want to work as a receptionist, then you get experience in office work and on the phones. You usually don't need some special degree. Getting such a degree is usually a waste of money since employers want experience and a certificate in Admin Asst. does not take the place of experience.

Other answers

If you want to be a receptionist, then go for Administrative Assistant (or Medical Reception if they have it). Medical Assistants work with patients and help the nurses and doctors when needed - they take vital signs, help with the medical part of the paperwork, etc. Some MAs that work in hospitals also spend time with the families and just check in on them.
