How hard is it to become an emt?

EMT? How hard is it to become one?

  • A techincal college here has classes about it and to be a first respond it only takes one full time semester and the other class takes a whole year but are they hard courses? And is ...show more

  • Answer:

If you was a medical assistant and drawing blood bothered you, then I definitely don't think a career as an EMT is good for you because EMT workers are actually the first people to the scene of an accident or murder. (ex. gun shot victims, bad car accidents, rape victims.. etcc....) And I think they are underpaid for all of the work that EMT's do

first responders do not get paid... depending on where you work as an emt will depend on what you pay.. i am an emt-iv and i get paid around 10 an hour, but i work for a private service... if i worked for 911 then i would get around 8 a hour.. the course was hard, but not that hard... technically we are not alloud to draw blood, but do have to start IV's... if you work for a private transport service then you will more than likely not have to deal with blood as your patients are already bandaged up and have their IV;s going..

As an E.M.T. in Michigan for the past 4 yrs. I can tell you the money is not the best ( but then to we don't do it for the money ). I know some people that have taken the class and passed without a problem but as soon as they get into the field they froze. If you made it through the M.A. course you should be able to pass the Basic course. The MFR course is shorter but not as involved ( meaning you do less in the field ).As far as blood draws no we don't do them, but you can expect to get bled on,puked on,peed on,crapped on,spit on,punched, kicked and if someone THINKS you did something wrong you MAY be sued ( better hope who ever did the paperwork did it right -- they have up to 7 yrs ).You will see people form born and at your hands.

You need to have advanced courses in biology and chemistry as well as be good in math. The courses are very scientific, so if you didn't like science, than this career is not for you. You probably won't have to draw blood, but you will need to administer iv medication and give needles in the course. The money is good, but you'll see some grisly things, such as dead bodies. It's all up to you, try the course, and if it isn't for you, the material should be transferable into a course at another college, or even at university.
