What is your career in law enforcement like?

What would be a good degree to get for a career in law enforcement?

  • I want to get into Law Enforcement, and the many departments i'm considering joining don't require degrees, but do pay more if you obtain one. What would be a good thing to ...show more

  • Answer:

Forget criminal justice, way to limiting and focused for potential police. You get all the CJ classes you need in a police academy. Whatever you are interested in. All education and exposure to different thinking is helpful to a police officer. I always suggest a science or philosophy since both force your to learn to use your critical thinking skills. For a bachelors degree you normally have to go 4 years full time. For an associates degree 2 years. Check on the departments requirements for extra pay. More and more departments nationwide are requiring 60 semester hours which is equal to 2 years full time. If you just go for two years you do not even have to decide on your major. You just get all of your gen ed classes out of the way. Most larger departments offer tuition reimbursement once you have passed the probationary stage.

Anything BUT criminal justice. This degree was invented for people that can't handle a REAL degree. It is actually worth LESS than not having a degree.

One way to find out is to go to the local police department and interview officers to see what they got degrees in before they got their jobs at the department. You could also find out exactly how their degree work relates to their field work (or office, or lab work, depending on what area of the department they work in). You could major in anything - accounting (forensic accounting is one way to bring down huge Ponzi schemes like Bernie Madoff), archaeology, anthropology, etc. Most majors have some sort of forensic tie-in.

criminal justice, police sciences, or forensic science... you need a bachelor's or higher. An associates (2 year) doesn't mean anything as far as pay enhancement.
