In rivers i wont wade any higher than my waist(even in chest waders), as the current will make moving difficult. In a lake i generally wouldn't go above my waist either since it can drop off suddenly. I would advise you wear a wading belt as it will stop you flooding your waders. Also a wading stick will help you to keep balance and also check the depth in front of you. If your not used to wading and cant see the bottom of the lake i would advise you take extreme caution and flooded waders WILL drown you.

It depends, if you have hip waders you can only go to where it ends at the top(near your waist) if you have chest waders you can go all the way up to your chest, just depends on where they end on you.
