Which German beer brands do you like the most?

What are some high-quality brands of beer?

  • I don't really like the taste of most brands of beer (Coors, Michelob, Genuine Draft, etc). I rarely drink any when I go out, so I really don't know much about beer. I tend ...show more

  • Answer:

Coors, Michelob, Genuine Draft are by far the best quality of beers that you can get. Keeping in mind that they are also some of the most boring beers. A few mid-ranged brewers like Sierra Nevada (Pale Ale, Barleywine, etc.) and Anchor (Liberty Ale, Porter) and Boston Brewing (Sam Adams) makes some very good beers that use good quality control measures too. About half of the craft brewers are suspect in there practices of making quality beers even if there hearts are in the right place. If you want beers that combine both quality of standards and refined taste it is something that comes through exploration. One example is beers made in Belgium. Although not all beers in Belgium are great they are credited with the combination of the two elements of quality more than any other nation. Czech Republic the same for Plis, Germany several styles Bock, pils, and schwarz, England for Pale and Brown Ales. Find in the U. S. many fine craft beers from the breweries mentioned and others.

Congrats for not following the masses. Here we have so many great craft breweries both regional and at national levels that there are always new beers to try. These breweries take pride in the beer they make and are not going to dumb it down and make it lighter. I'll suggest some things with great flavor that are not just huge beers. Samuel Adams Boston Lager or Samuel Adams Noble Pils if you can find it Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Magic Hat #9 Barbar Anchor Steam Oskar Blues: Mamas Little Yella Pils or Dale's Pale Ale Belhaven Scottish Ale After you have gotten some of these under your belt I'd try: Stone Arrogant Bastard Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA Chimay Tripel (white label) or Grand Reserve (blue label) Delerium Tremens Unibroue Maudite or La Fin Du Monde This should get you started.

In general, I'm not a beer fan either, but I like Guinness. It starts with a rich and creamy flavor that I wouldn't call beer, but I don't really know how to place it, then it's got a really strong, bitter beer flavor, sort of like a bite. And then it whisks itself off your pallet with a completely clean finish, seriously, the finish is like water. I like it in the way that I like black coffee, the strong bite that instantly mellows out. Most beer stays on your pallet for far too long, and that's what I can't stand. Most beer doesn't "bite" it festers. Guinness doesn't do that. I suggest extra stout in the bottle. Some people like the cans, but to me it doesn't taste right from a can. As with all drinks, soda even.

Heineken, Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada, Imperial, Stella Arquios (or something like that), Widmer, and Guiness are all GREAT beers! Samuel Adams has a lot of varieties, so I recommend Boston Lager if you want a good standard beer to start out with.

Any beer from Shiner is going to be a high quality beer. They've been brewing that stuff in Shiner, Texas for over 100 years. Its a small micro-brewery... Best stuff I've ever had. Leinenkugels - Out of Wisconsin is also a very high quality beer. They have several different types. Right now I'm enjoying a Leinies Summer Shandy. Great beer for the summer. One of my favorites is Spotted Cow. It's also from Wisconsin but it's only sold - In Wisconsin. Kinda a shame. ---A later note. If you really want to look and sound high class, and you have the money, go with a Hacker-Pschorr. It's a wheat beer so its really smooth and not as bitter. It's been brewed in Germany since 1417. You'll find it in most high class restaurants and your larger bars. When you pour it into a glass, remember to swirl it a bit when it's half empty to get all the wheat and goodness that tends to settle at the bottom. Enjoy----

Heineken really sucks, some really good brands are: Grolsch, Duff, Edelweiss, Schultenbräu, Grimbergen and Westmalle
