Postal & Shipping Services: How can I get a temporary mailing address without providing a current residency near the mailing address?
-
I'm a recent college graduate from the southwest Michigan area, and I'm currently resided just outside of Denver, CO. I was originally planning on going to California to network in the high tech industry, but my car broke down in Nebraska, so I decided to come to Colorado instead, since it's less expensive. I need to change my address on my resume to attract employers in the area, but the US Postal Service won't issue me a PO Box because I don't have proof of residency in the area and I don't have a hotel bill in the area to prove where I'm staying. Currently, I'm staying at a family friends house while they are away on vacation (super nice of them) and I don't want to pay for a hotel room just to get a mailing address (that seems really wasteful), and likewise I'd prefer not to use our friend's street address on my resume if at all possible. So I'm looking for some kind of service that will issue me a mailing address in or near Denver, CO without being nazis about proof of residency or hotel rooms in the area. I have a drivers license, debit card, birth certificate, vehicle registration... etc... all the necessary ID forms... and I can show up physically to prove where I am. Any insight would be amazing, Thanks!

Answer:
The address on your resume is meaningless. Most companies will assume that you are a resident of the area if you have an area code on the cell phone number you are using. Buying a cheap disposable phone and obtaining "local" area code in the process should fix this. This is a rather odd question. You state that you are looking for a job in the area and you are currently living there. Since the police may stop you if you don't have local plates ( they may be less understanding if you tell them that you live there and you haven't bothered to obtain a local driving license or license plates) why not simply obtain a local address by renting an apartment? You'll have to do this when/if you are hired anyway or when you attempt to get a driver's license (since you don't want to use your friend's address for some reason.) Some advice: After clearing it with your friends, receive several pieces of mail at their residence with your name on them. Take that mail to the post office and obtain a mailbox. Or take the mail to the DMV and get a local driver's license. Then take that license and the mail to a post office and get a mailbox.
