A few questions about picking majors and minors for college.?

Here is the harder part of this whole process, there is so much out there that you have never even been exposed to that you might discover even more things that interest you in college! If you want to learn to write well, I strongly urge you to consider a small private liberal arts college. At a liberal arts college you still choose a major, but the fundamentals of communication are the core of the education process. So you will write a LOT. You will also be required to take courses in all kinds of subjects and make connections between them which is certainly beneficial for someone who wants to write for a living. Class sizes are generally small and you really get to know your professors. You will certainly get feedback on how to become a better writer (even when you think you know what you are doing, you can always be better!) Along the way you may also discover new things that you are interested in, and you don't have to decide a major until your junior year if you so choose. Depending on your academics you have different options. Look at the Claremont Colleges, Redlands, Occidental, Santa Clara, Cal Lutheran, as some examples. Take tours, see what their admission criteria are, and most importantly find a good fit. It doesn't matter the name or reputation, if you don't feel comfortable at a school you won't be able to get the most out of it. You should also plan to live on campus, it is an amazing experience. Finally, don't let the cost scare you. Most schools have good financial aid and it can actually be cheaper to attend a private school than a public in the end. I know, hard to believe when you compare the costs you see on paper, but it is true. Wait until your acceptance letters and financial aid packages come in to make a final decision if money is a consideration. Good luck, Holly

I got my degree in Art History from UC Davis, where I'm currently employed in the events office. I'm also interested in pretty much every subject you mentioned, and have plenty of friends here who are likewise interested. Most of them are humanities majors of some stripe (literature, philosophy, sociology, religious studies, languages and linguistics, history). One thing I would do, whether a major or minor, is include a degree in some branch of history. Be it art history or general history, make sure you have a foundation in that field. It will be invaluable to you as you pursue your career as a writer. With a background in history, you've prepared yourself for scholarship at the graduate level, teaching, and other academic work. You'd also be set up for careers in the media (journalism, etc). Some great schools in CA: UC Davis has a great humanities dept. UC Berkeley is also up there at the top. Same with UCLA and UC Riverside. State schools might be helpful at getting your lower division work knocked out before you transfer to a UC, though I believe (based on experience) that you can get the same quality of education from a local community college. Both the state schools and community colleges have transfer agreements with the UC. Good luck, and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about life in Davis.

I suppose it would depend on what you think you might want to do. If you are intersted in writing you could always major in something like English with an emphasis in creative writing and/or literature. Then minor in physics and religion/philosophy. Later on if you decide that you are interested in philosphy and religion you could go on to seminary school.
