Generally I go to http://www.invisible-scanner.com/ and put a Yahoo Messenger ID in the box and click Check . It will check and show you if the yahoo ID is invisible, online or offline. It also shows the avatar and other information about yahoo IDs. Another is http://www.imvisible.info/ but to me invisible-scanner is better

There used to be a program called "buddy spy" for that. Not sure if it is still in existence. Search in browser- buddy spy program for yahoo.
