Answer:
My son is the same way. He would not sit still for a single minute to do his work and yet he remembers everything. Even with his difficulty in sitting still and concentrate, we have managed to sneak in learning activities within his daily plays and games. In order to learn counting, numbers and eventually addition, I would start with things that he liked first and foremost. Mty son used to love to eat cheerio and I would use that to learn counting. We would be eating breakfast and counting at the same time. I would also use his toys to learn math, such as his lego bricks, and used it as tools to learn numbers. In fact at later time, I actually used that for learning addition as well. Have numbers written on a small piece of paper, and have him played matching game, i.e. match the amount of legos, with the actual number on the paper. I would go to the park and play marching game with him, and start counting from 1 to 20 as we march. To tell you the truth, I had only done the marching game twice, since he got them by then. The same thing with alphabet as well, I would see what your son loves to do, and incorporated learning into his games. In my case, I used train as a tool. I would find story books with trains in it (not those with just picture and a single word under it, but an actually book with story), and tells him where the word train is, and let him them on the subsequent page. And then have him tried to write those letters out. Eventually he is curious enough to want to know all the words and letters in it. My final suggestion would be to incorporate play into learning and vice versa. I believe children think that learning is boring, thus it is not something that they want to do. Regardless of what your child diagnosis turned out to be, you can always teach your kid early on, it might be harder but you still can.

It may be that he's a kinesthetic (hands-on) learner. I would suggest finding ways to teach him that include movement and touch. Play hop scotch and have him jump on the numbers. Have him count the number of time he bounces a ball, jumps on a trampoline or does jumping jacks. Draw letters in sand, rice or pudding. Go on a scavenger hunt to look for letters. Place letters on the floor and have him hop on the correct letter. Have him form the shape of letters with his body. Hands on learners NEED movement and touch in order to learn and remember. That's why your son learns so much while he's playing. He will learn it eventually. Hope this helps!

I would suggest to talk to your pediatrician. Being that the child is 5 years old, he should be learning his letters and numbers..It could just be perhaps he has too much sugar in his diet. I have seen it happen before.

Typical boy! You can help him learn letters and numbers by making it a game. you can have him help you find items during your grocery trip, such as "We need three cans of peas. look for the P for peas!" Go on a letter hunt (like in the book Bear Hunt, I did this on our playground. They had to go up the steps, down the slide, ect, this also helped them follow directions) There are alot of creative ways to 'sneak' in learning at home.
