Why have Indian railways not started ticket booking for regular local train journeys?

  • The railways have great success with long distance train booking through IRCTC. Why don't they start bookings for everyday local train journey through an app or website? I mean it could mean more revenue, no more long Q's . Are they facing some challenges?

    There is a vey good reason why Indian Railways does not allow booking non-reserved tickets. When you book an e-ticket with IRCTC, a copy of this ticket (a record) is generated and is stored with Indian Railways. This record is reflected in the final Chart and is used by TTE.  This duplication of record helps them prevent abuse or fraud - people editing tickets through Photoshop or any editing software. This is the reason why your wait-listed e-ticket gets automatically cancelled. Although they do have a record for it but then you are allowed to enter a reserved coach with a wait-listed ticket. People could simply use fake wait-listed tickets and enter reservation coaches. It would really get hectic to check each and every wait-listed ticket for authenticity. On the same guidelines, if they are to issue local journey tickets or season tickets online, they will have to go through a hassle of creating so many records and then validating each of these tickets. For them putting a TTE on a railway platform for checking platform tickets is a big execution problem already so validating the above process would be even more problematic. People would start travelling on fake tickets and no one would catch them. So they would end up loosing revenue rather than making a little more of it This abuse is very minimal in case of reserved ticket because the risk is transferred to the owner of the ticket. There is one seat and its likely to be occupied by the legitimate-ticket-owner. P.S. This could be implemented when you have a robust and fast validating system in place. But that aint happening soon.

1) Most common reason is that majority of the travelers in general class are economically backward, so they don't have usually internet access or debit card access 2) It will not be financially efficient. Because it charges 12.75 Rs. as irctc service charge plus bank charges on internet booking. So, people would resist online booking and save money by waiting in queue for 10 min. 3) There will be also some minor conflict. Such as, A ] Complexity. General tickets for Broad gauge train and Meter gauge train. For memu, passenger train, Increased station list because of inclusion of small station which are not stoppage of reserved trains. B ] It would be rather inconvenient for ticket checker to check the general tickets from mobiles of passengers. Time consuming activity. C ] Tickets can be used multiple times in single day. Currently the ticket checker marks the tickets with pen to prevent multiple journy on single paper ticket.
