    And on the other side of the coin: 1) the odds are the item in question may no longer be available in that store 2) it could be seasonal, so why take it back so it can sit elsewhere 3) new management could be in place at that store now 4) if it's a small company every penny counts, and a return means refund 5) even Walmart doesn't take back merchandise after so long a time

What matters is the return policy when you bought it. If the return policy said that you could return forever, then you should still be able to return it. If the return policy did not say whether there was a time limit, then you probably cannot return it after one year.
