Online by email works too. The pace is (obviously) a lot slower, but in my experience it can work quite well. I've been running a game since 2000, and have been VERY happy with how it's progressed. Character development was extremely detailed, and I find the narrative playstyle is more developed.

I'd also recommend the official WotC boards at www.wizard.com/dnd. The forums include a game finder forum, and the chat rooms have room set aside for online gaming. Its not hard to find scheduled or pick up games there.
