What is appropriate for tipping at a hotel?

What is customary regarding tipping hotel employees in the US?  In Europe?

  • How much should housekeepers be tipped?  A percentage of the room rate? Should the length of one's stay affect the amount?  When, daily or at the end on one's stay?  Should any hotel employees other than housekeepers, servers, and bellmen be tipped, e.g., mainternance people, the person who brings me the room service menu that should have been in my room but wasn't, the person who brings a disposable razor?  How much?

    Its good to tip the bellman $1 per bag or a $2 minimum if you have only one bag. Tip the parking valet $2 to bring you your car. If you dine at a restaurant, whether at the hotel or elsewhere, be sure to tip your server. In the U.S. the quality of the restaurant plays a part in what the customary tip amount is. For example if you dine at a very casual place such as a diner or a low-cost family style restaurant, it's customary to tip your server 15%. If you dine at a nicer restaurant yet not quite fine dining, then 18% is suitable. If you are in for some fine dining, you will want to tip 20%.

If I had to tip that many people, I couldn't afford to travel!  Tipping the bellman who helps you with your bags is one thing but the housekeepers clean your room when you aren't in it.  They don't ever do a good enough job for me to tip them anyway.  I would give someone a tip that goes out of their way to do something that isn't "their job" except for bellman.  It is considered customary to tip them even though it is their job.  $5 to $10.
