Tech Support: Can you have too many PPTP connections in Windows 7?
-
This is for Windows 7 Pro. One of the functions of my job is to maintain and service VOIP PBXes for my customer. The one that we use allows remote connections via PPTP. I have over 100 different PPTP VPN connections in my Network Connections control panel. Recently, things bogged down considerably. To connection to a system, I click on the network icon in the system tray, choose the VPN I want to connect to and click Connect. Usually it is very quick. Recently, it started taking a (relatively) long time to go through each one of these steps. I might see a delay of over a minute from the time I clicking on the network icon and system tray. It can take another minute or two from the time I click connect until it actually starts to connect (otherwise it stays frozen.) Doing other things such as trying to open the properties of any of the connections can take a similarly long time. My PC is not lagging in any other way. At the same time this happens, other programs open, close and perform well with no issues. I tried deleting a handful of connections I no longer need without effect. Rebooting also did not help. This is the second time this has happened to me. The last time I reformatted as I can't keep my customers on hold for 4 or 5 minutes while trying to connect to their PBX, a process that usually takes seconds. In both cases, I had over 100 different PPTP connections listed in my Network Connections control panel. I'm wondering: 1. Is there any way to resolve this issue without reformatting and reinstalling/reloading an image? That's a pain. 2. Is there a limit to the amount of PPTP connections I can create? Am I corrupting something by creating so many? Please let me know if you need any more information. Edit: Just remembered that last time this happened, I updated my network card's drivers with no success. It was on a different PC too. Edit 2: A system restore to an earlier date this month, when I had less VPNs set up, fixed the problem. It seems more likely now that Windows 7 gets upset if you have too many PPTP connections set up.

Answer:
I have been digging around and from what I can find out, the limit is 20 connections in Windows 7. It's the old story I think. You can't really use Microsoft desktop Operating systems in a server function. Why not install Windows server 2008 R2 on your desktop. It works fine as a desktop environment had probably doesn't have these limitations. If you need it I have good connections with Microsoft and can ask after the Christmas holiday for specific confirmation http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/inbound-connection-limit/e449bf9f-425c-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5
