How do I use my car speakers with my home system?

Can i use car speakers on a home stereo system?

  • Answer:

Not a good idea. Do the math, you are expecting speakers designed for 100 cubic feet to fill an area ten times larger, in addition, your home amp is unlikely to support 4 ohm loads. Car stereo belongs in cars. Period.

If you have some car speakers, but no other speakers, then it's better than nothing. As long as you know that car speakers are much less powerful than home hi-fi speakers, they are often hugely over-rated power-wise. At low power they should be OK. If you play the music very loudly you may find the sound distorts, if it does turn the volume down, distortion is an early sign that the speakers and/ or the amplifier are overloaded.

Of course you can. Just make sure the impedance of the speakers matches that of the amp/receiver. Within a few Ohms is OK. More than five Ohms difference may damage the amp/receiver.
