to answer #4 yes your tivo functions the same way. If you have a HD Tivo or Premier all you would need from the cable company is a cable card for HD. I dont know the older units. Tivo has good upgrade programs. I connect my TIVO to my HDTV with a HDMI cable for best/easiest connection
