  • Answer:

It is possible to record pre-recorded programs from your DVR to VHS/DVD. Simply connect the DVR's output to the input of the VCR or DVD-recorder. Leave the DVR connected to the TV as normal. Set your DVD-recorder/VCR to use the video input where you connected the DVR. For instance, on my unit, this is "IN2", while on others it may be AUX1 or something. When you're all set, pop in a blank tape or DVD, start playing the program on the DVR, and hit the record button on the DVD-recorder/VCR. When the program is finished, hit stop on the DVD-Recorder/VCR. You can hit the pause button on the DVD-Recorder/VCR while you skip past commercials. This allows you to fit more onto the tape/DVD. If your DVR died entirely, but you still want to record programs from cable, you can still use the DVD-recorder or VCR as you would normally do to record a program. However, the tuner in the DVD-recorder or VCR won't handle digital channels. You'll have to experiment to find out what channels the DVD-recorder or VCR can and cannot receive. Unfortunately, the most common problem DVRs have is with the hard drive dying. While this is easy to fix - just replace the drive - it also means you lose all your recorded shows. In most cases, they'll probably just give you a whole new unit, which means you'll still lose all your recorded shows. If you are shopping for a DVD recorder, I would recommend getting one that comes with the new digital TV tuner. While you don't need it (you have cable) it doesn't hurt to be prepared, just in case. These aren't too expensive, maybe around $130 or so. You can find them at any place that sells TV equipment, like Walmart (had one for $120 I believe), Best Buy, etc. You can also record to your Mac, but you better have a really large hard drive! You'll need a video capture kit, normally used to deal with home video cameras, or a TV recording kit, which turns your Mac into a high-tech VCR. Once you get the hardware installed, follow the directions as though you were connecting the DVR to a VCR/DVD-recorder. The program on the Mac operates basically the same as those devices.
