As far as I know what you're trying to do is not well known and requires a lot of equipment. Not many people bring video to the laptop, but rather vice-versa. I talked to an Apple store employee and she told me I would need to buy a few things before I could accomplish that task. If I remember correctly you'd be better off just buying a new monitor/TV since the costs would be about the same.
