Answer:
I would suggest you find a major other than criminal justice. While criminal justice is a good major, it is overly saturated and pretty much worthless on the job market anywhere else. Many police agencies look favorably upon degrees in fields which have to do with criminal justice, for instance psychology and sociology would be good fields to look into. If you can somehow major in one of these and minor in criminal justice, that would be even better. If anything, the non-cj degree will give you the ability to bounce back if you changed fields for whatever reason. Other things you may want to look into include CPR and First Aid training which you can receive from your local red cross, try to obtain some type of handgun safety certificate or pistol permit, try to get a tiny bit of proficiency with Spanish or another in demand language, try to participate in some type of physical club or activity routinely at school, and try to do as well as you can in school to be accepted into different honor societies and the such. Basically, you'll want to spend as much of your time accomplishing as much as you can.

WEST is right about majoring in criminal justice. But minoring, or taking a few classes at least will be beneficial. Also, I'd say take any gun classes you can get your hands on, that will look good on your app and help you when it comes time in the academy! Some academies around here do their initial quals on handgun in the third week, and if you fail you are SOL!!!

Well, this is what my daughter did, she went to community college after HS, and got a degree in Criminal Justice, then she volunteer at her local pd, to see how things are done around, and to boost her chance in getting hired soon. Then she went back to college, and is EMT/first aid certified. Then she enrolled in an academy, and got hired for reserved officer, and she was reserved for a year or so, and then applied with her department, when they had an opening for full time police officer. Hope this helps, but its helpful to go to college and get a degree, you get promoted and make more money. I heard CHP has one of the hardest academy ever in California. I heard my daughter said that a degree in English is good too.

Take a bit of a business mgmt. course, because if you ever make it to Chief you're going to have to juggle budgets, pay rolls, get funding..... all the fun things like that. And seeing you want CHP I would suggest proficient fluency in Spanish.
