What is the scientific basis for loud and upbeat music being constantly played in retail stores?

• I mean, I know it is believed that it helps boost sales, but where does this belief com from? Could it be that studies were not conclusive but store owners jumped to fill their stores with music? Could it be that it may help some kinds of stores but not others? Could it be that the choice of music can be counterproductive? I usually hate music in stores and I think it pushes me to abandon the store without buying…

  A couple of things, either or neither of which may be true where you are (one of which may not really be true at all :). When I was just out of high school, I worked in a large retail store. The music came very close to driving me insane. If I found that there really were subliminal messages in that music I would not be surprised at all. Completely anecdotal. Martin Lindstrom, who is one of the top marketing experts in the world, talks about music in stores and malls in his book Brandwashed. He says that in Japan, they will create a song for a children's show. And then they play that song, muzaked beyond conscious recognition, in the background at the malls years later. Traffic and revenues rise significantly. Not sure if that happens elsewhere, or how long its been going on.
