If all you really want in an iPod is music (and maybe video), I'd skip the the iPod and just get a multimedia phone. It's cheaper, one less device and puts you in a better position to get the portable gaming device.

Get an iPod touch. 1. its fun, easy to use 2. you can have your music 3. you can have many games 4. you can play games and listen to music at the same time 5. you can go on the internet- cant do that on other ipods 6. getting an ipod touch is less expensive than getting an ipod AND a gaming system.
