You have to make sure the converter box is turned on and is set to the right channel. It does not use that much electricity. I have recorded things while I was away a school. I set up the VCR like you said. Then I turn on the TV and the converter box and change it to the channel I am to record. Before I leave I turn off the TV and leave on the converter box.
