  • Answer:

With a lift, bigger than stock tires, a carbureted engine, and a transmission with no overdrive, The claim of 11-12 MPG is pretty optimistic based on my experiences. I think you can realistically expect closer to 7-9 MPG with the 1985 F-150, a little less if if he neglected to regear the truck. If I were you I'd wouldn't go any older than the 1993-1996 F-150's. I think that the $2900 figure you got was a bit high as well. NADA puts the value of your truck, assuming, it's an XLT with power windows/locks/etc, and in good condition at around $2200-$2300, Retail, and about $1700 trade in value, And Edmunds, puts the private party sales value at $1300. KBB is notorious for giving highball estimates, that aren't realistic in relation to the current market. Anyway I think it would be a mistake to give a newer truck with fewer miles on it for an older truck with aftermarket modifications.
