Are European Union member countries in support of Turkey joining? Why or why not?

Answer:
France has a disproportionate influence in the European Union. They are against it. France recently passes a law criminalizing denial of the Armenian genocide by Turkey. Turkey's leaders have decided to increase their influence in Arab countries by rousing up anti-Israeli feeling. The economic strain of bailing out Greece has diminished enthusiasm for adding Turkey.

It s impossible for Turkey to join Europe for à single reason : the adhesion should be approved by unanimity and southern Cyprus is not recognized by Turkey (they dont have any diplomatic relztionship). Plus both France and Germany who are the real deciders are against for both immigration and political reasons. In fact, only USA is supporting the entrance of Turkey so United Kingdom is supporting too like others vassal state like Poland or Czech republic.

Officially, they are in support as long as Turkey meets all the requirements necessary for entry. Considering how slow the process has been going (the association agreement was signed in 1963!) most politicians know that the question of membership and dealing with masses of voters who are strongly opposed to Turkey's bid won't be a problem during their mandate. So most of them say "yes, Turkey's future is in the EU, get moving on implementing reforms!"Unofficially however, considering the strong opposition the general population expresses, there's a pretty big chance that, if Turkey were to come and say "there, all done, I did everything you told me to", at least 4 to 6 countries would veto Turkey's accession.Realistically speaking, the accession of a country that: is overwhelmingly Muslim has (or will have by the time accession will seriously be discussed) a population bigger than Germany's has a GDP per capita on a par with the least developed countries in the EU has a large youth population compared with the EU average is secular due to a military that regularly stages coups in order to remove Islamist parties from power( Side note: it's worth pointing out that, at the behest of the EU, the army was brought under civilian control in recent years. This had the unintended consequence of leaving Erdogan free to implement his Islamist agenda. It makes you wonder if EU officials have any grey matter between their ears) is not going to happen in the next 10 to 25 years.

Germany was against, so France. These are the countries in EU, decision makersUK supports Turkey's joining to the EU. 2015 and 2016 saw refugees coming from Syria to EU. Russia with its diplomatic and military moves in Syria has proven to the world that Russia is the country in this region to be dealt with.In other words, EU has lost its importance on Syria and other regional conflicts like Ukraine Russia conflict as well. Germany realized that if this trends continue, EU would have no right to say anything about important matters in this world.Germany's Merkel therefore started getting closer to Turkey. Since November 2015, in 6 months, Merkel visited Turkey around 5 or 6 times. Gave lots of concessions to improve the relations. For EU, it is the chance to gain some lost ground. But these are all tactical moves. Turkey doesn't want to enter EU. Turkish administration and Erdogan's advisors and think tank groups always say: Turkey won't enter EU if it won't have the same rights like all the other members. If that will happen, due to the size of Turkey's population, Turkey will have same powers like Germany and France. The latter 2 countries would not allow it.As per Turkish administration, Turkey is not a country which can be treated like other countries in EU which just follow whatever Germany and France says. Practically, Turkey is not interested in joining to EU as just follower state. Germany and France (nowadays only Germany, France is almost gone as well) is not interested in seeing Turkey as strong as Germany in power for decision making in EU. So answer is obvious.

As I have posed this question to Europeans, the answer I often get has to do with the size and cultural differences of Turkey. One Austrian opponent to Turkish entry put it this way: "Turkey has almost 80 million citizens, almost all of them Muslims. If the bottom 10% decided to become economic migrants to the rest of Europe, we could see 8 to 10 million people surging westwards. And they would be the poorest of the poor in Turkey."That is the sort of argument that anti-immigration movements have found to work the best when creating opposition to Turkey's eventual entry into Europe. It will actually be interesting to see of the proposed visa-free travel will result in that sort of migration. I think that the current movement away from a secular state under Erdogan has strengthened opposition to their entry even if one were to argue that the migrants might be exactly those people who are most opposed to the changes.

No.Turkey has continued its repressive policies towards it minorities, particularly the Kurds. This is simply incompatible with being part of the EU. When Spain wanted entry they were told very clearly that what they were doing with the Basks and the Catalans needed to end. Repression is intolerable in the EU. All citizens of our union should be equal and feel that they are respected for who and what they are. Regardless of what language they speak. Now that ErdoÄan is turning Turkey into an even more repressive state, accession is dead in the water.
