Are the Misconceptions about multi level marketing (MLM) / direct selling / network marketing true?

  • Many people are scared of network marketing or MLM, why is that? Representatives of MLM show flowery pictures that I can make millions if I work hard and not quit for couple of years, is it true? If all they say is true and if people start joining MLM voluntarily, what happens to our economy and marketing system?

  • Answer:

The impact to the economy and marketing system is underway as we speak, and has been for many years. Direct selling companies now account for many Billions of dollars of sales worldwide each year. When those companies are providing a superior product or service, it absolutely impacts the pricing of the traditional distribution companies. I have seen a major service category have its average pricing shift down by about 10% over 2-3 years due to an implementation by a major player in network marketing. Most traditional manufacturers wish they could shift toward a direct model, but their products simply aren't compelling enough to get people talking about them. Think about television commercials and how few of them you watch now due to changes in technology. The entire reason "soap operas" came into existence was to sell "soap". Now how do they communicate to their customers? Only through the store shelves, and the rules have changed there too. Now Walmart dictates the prices, the quality, the products, and the manufacturers have no choice but to pay and play by their rules. So yes, there are some companies that are feeling the impact. They are called traditional model companies. Network marketing is the new way, and anyone who doesn't get on board with that will be left behind. As for the flowery pictures... yeah, those are mostly garbage. Many companies have compensation plans that really don't work for most people. They hold up examples of their top .005% as what is possible, but realistically the vast majority of MLM recruits lose money overall. There are only a few companies that have a valuable system that doesn't hurt anyone, and they are ALWAYS based on products first, and providing value to the end consumer. I'm very glad I found one of the few.

Misconceptions are by definition not true. So I will assume that you meant to ask a different question.MLM is basically a Ponzi scheme in which those who get in early rip off those who get in later by pretending that the market can expand exponentially forever. The requirement for success in MLM is the same as in any confidence game, that is the ability to inspire total confidence in the marks while lying to them with the greatest apparent sincerity. Most forms of MLM are illegal.Questions about MLM should be banned from Quora.

If you follow twitter feeds or Fb posts of MLM members, most are guilty of re-using that same beach pic from 4 years ago over and over.  If you research most boasts you will see they border on lies.  The best way is to review their annual reports if available.    Typically they will tell a completely opposite story.  I truly believe that high turnover rates seldom indicate that they've simply run out of places to store their money!
