How are employment background checks run?

  • What I'm asking is, does an actual person make phone calls to the previous employers and write a report on the information obtained, or do most business's have access to a ...show more

  • Answer:

Most follow ups with former places of employment are done over the phone. Very little information is given out because of fear of lawsuits. Unless I really knew the person calling for a reference well all I would say is " helga worked in the toy department from 11/2/87 to 12/17/94 as a title if she had one and she is or is not elegible for reemployment. If Helga was a great worker if say Helga was a great worker. If Helgas work sucked I'd just leave it with either no elegible for rehire or I would not rehir her. Sorry if you happen to be named Helga. I didn't notice

Usually they check your police records, they may look you up on the internet or facebook to make sure you not some weirdo, if you got fired from your previous job they may call and ask why, etc. They won't just call up every last boss you've had...

It varies. A background check is done with a database and it just shows if you have a criminal record and sometimes they run a credit check too, but that is illegal in some states. Some employers will contact a candidates past or current employers and ask some questions, usually they'll only ask a question like ''Would you hire this person again''...I don't think they make it too personal!
