Even though it pays the bills, should I continue doing my current job when I feel like there is nothing to learn or should I take courses to become a teacher, which does interest me, even though there's no guarantee that I'll get a job?

I am 29, Working as an office assistant. This job sucks, a there is literally nothing to do. I get stagnant, no personal development. no new contacts, nothing to learn, but they are paying me enough to pay meet my monthly expense. i can not take this job anymore. I like to work with Kids, and planning to do some Motessori course, and wants to persue my career in it, But in my country there is no job guarentee, as to whether i could get any job in teaching. I can not afford to leave this job, to do the course, my employer is not allowing me to work part time. I have no enough savings. Completly lost..........

Answer:
I feel for you. It is terrible to be in a dead end job where there is nothing to do... The day drags on forever!! I was in a similar situation in a job that had no work for me to do. I took some classes to get my teaching certification and I did the homework during the work day. Since my job required me to be I front of a computer looking busy it was easy for me to do my homework during the work day. I definitely think regardless of what career you switch to you should take some evening courses; the mental stimulation is very important since you aren't being challenged at work. But I would caution you to do a thorough cost/benefit analysis of choosing to go into teaching at the Montessori level. As you said there is no guarantee of a job. I don't know what a pre-k teacher makes but I assume you would be taking a pay cut for a job that may not even be available. If pre-k is the only thing you are passionate about then go for the degree but I have to imagine that there would be other similar fields that could make you happy. Could teaching elementary school work? Maybe you would be happy teaching 1st or 2nd grade... I think you would make more money doing that. Regardless you should start some kind of evening education program ASAP. You can figure out the game plan after you have the qualifications. Good luck! Keep us posted...
