What jobs pay well in the computer sciences field? (For lack of a better word)?

  • Answer:

Architecture and management. Development (programming) is fairly low pay. There is a lot of foreign competition and honestly, the work is not that hard. The best pay is in management and in fact, IT managers make more money than anybody but the CEO and other VP's at a lot of small to mid-tier firms. Something around $110k to $140k a year right now. Within Com-Sci, you have several fields: Development (Programming & Projects) Infrastructure (Machines & Networks) Engineering (Chip and computer design) Data (Database, Architecture) Analytics (Using computers to solve math problems) Engineering and Data pay the best, followed by Infrastructure then Development. Data is kind of odd becucase people misuse the titles a lot. Data Analyst is a low-pay job that is actually a type of keypunch or programmer. Database Administrator is a relatively good pay job (~$70k) that requires a fairly good mind for organizing information and finding problems. Data Architecture is the design and develpment of information and data storage and is a rather challenging field- it's hard to find people with a good mind at the multi-dimensional problem solving needed to be a great architect. True Analytics (Econometrics, Statisticians, Actuaries and SAS Programmers) are very well paid. Salaries start around $100k. Soft analytics (Financial Analytics, System Control) has starting pay in the $60s to $80s, so it's not bad either. These people use computer science extensively, particularly programming knowledge and the ability to order and organize information. However they are not "IT People" if you ask "IT People". Not sure why, it's a culture thing I think.

First of all congratulations on thinking ahead of the curve. Currently of the languages you have mentioned above, Java pays more and has considerably higher number of openings in the job market. Of all the fields, hardware networking and Graphics probably pay higher if you can get into the cream... i.e. if you can get to be one of the few best ones out there... which is extremely difficult. If you want to play it safe and are comfortable working in a cubicle all day, you might consider becoming an application developer in Java or .net If you just want to look and compare the number of jobs in each field, just go to any search engine or a jobs site and search for it and the number of results you get back tells you whether it is popular or not.

That's me ...

Hi Friend, Every phase in Computer Science will provide a better career for you either you go for coding, designing, chip development or networking. The thing that matters is that how quickly you absorb these skills and can show on industry platform. Thanks!
