  I have a pair of Riedell white ribbons and they are great for skating around and doing the basics, but they aren't really meant for doing much more. They are designed for recreational skating and really don't have the ankle support for jumps and the toe pick is small, so it's not the best for spins. They make a great first pair of skates as there is no break in time and very little maintenance, as the sole and uppers are both plastic, but if you want to go farther than the basics then they won't last very long. Yellow ribbons are about the same. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I don't have much money, but I really want to learn to figure skate and at least master a few jumps and spins. I've since moved up to a pair of Silver Medallions and they are perfect for my needs. They are entry level instructional skates that are made for people learning the basics up to spins and single jumps. And what sealed the deal for me was that they were only $60 USD b/c I got them second hand from someone who had hardly used them and wanted them gone. I suggest you go to a pro shop and try on some skates to figure out how they feel and what size you need. Then you can do some hunting and look for a good deal. Check your local paper/classified adds, ebay, and ask around at your local rink. Just make sure you examine the skates before you buy them and make sure there are no deep creases and that the blade is no chipped/nicked or rusted. Good Luck
